Best Type of Wood

We all have our favorite woods and I would be hard pressed to say that one is better than another. The truth is most wood is good to burn once it is well seasoned. However, with that said here are a few of my favorites:

  • Mesquite
  • Juniper
  • Oak
  • Pine for starting fires
  • Pecan Tree

Tips for burning wood:

  • You may need to preheat the flue first. This can be accomplished by rolling up a newspaper and burning it like a candle
  • Have plenty of kindling to burn in the beginning for at least 10 to 15 minutes. Kindling is small pieces of wood 1 1/2 X 1 1/2 X 10 inches.
  •  The fireplace grate should be towards the back of the fireplace.
  •  Place three pieces of kindling on grate slightly separated then stack three more pieces perpendicular and slightly separated. A third stack may be needed.
  • Make sure your damper is open every time you start a fire.
  • You can now start the newspaper under the grate.

Storing your firewood:

  1. Store firewood away from the house or buildings and six inches off of the ground.
  2. Stored wood should be covered from rain or snow.
